Yes, ninja exploration using dps bombers is dead

I thought I was being all clever, changing my ninja exploration setup so the bomber had some resists and putting RR on the tengu. Surely, I thought, the tengu could clear out frigate hulls, then the bomber could come in and, with the help of a little RR, easily tank the few ships which would switch to it every so often. Because as we all know, retribution AI rats definitely prefer to hit ships of similar size.

Nope. Every ship immediately switched to the bomber, and stayed on it for several minutes. It held up reasonably well against a mix of 16-ish battlecruisers and battleships, but it would never work in the last room of the 7 or 8/10.

Thanks CCP.

  1. So battleships and battlecruisers turn on a fragile ship that is specifically build to hurt them? Sounds like a case of "it's not a bug, it's a feature".

    1. Or they will stupidly chase a logi around and ignore the ships destroying them.

    2. After discovering that ships which aggro on warpin and ships which don't behave very differently in this regard, I have come to the conclusion that it is not intended behavior.

  2. Do we know for sure that the rats shoot at whatever ship is doing the most DPS? I'm still trying to figure out what kind of a second ship to replace the stealth bomber with.

    1. They don't. Apparently what happens is that any ships which are set to aggro on warpin will all automatically aggress any ship which warps in. After a minute they mostly switch off the bomber.

Ships which are not set to aggro on warpin mostly never target the bomber.

  3. Actually, Thanks CCP.

BTW: it's not a single-variable calculation to determine primary.

  4. So I've thought it through and the most obvious solution I can come up with is to use a covert ops frigate and a Tengu. Getting decent DPS out of the Tengu means sacrificing its ability to bust through gate camps, but if you're using a covert ops to scout the route you can just avoid camps instead. Just put a prototype cloak on the Tengu so that if you need to hide you can warp to a safe spot and cloak up.

  5. You could try with a loki as the dps support

  6. cant you just speed tank with the sb and use long range torps?

    1. I have never tested the range of NPC missiles. That might be possible, albeit a huge pain to actually do.

Currently I'm working on another possibility.
