I don't care how many WPM you typed

Today I am going to make an exception to my no-writing-about-things-outside-of-eve guideline. See, I read eve blogs for content, and this is something the majority of blog entries do not have. Banter blogs are bad enough, generating dozens of posts full of identical drivel, but this recent how-fast-can-you-type thing forces me to complain; it's not even eve related.

"Design your own mission"? Boring and pointless. "What are your plans for the next year"? Boring, but at least it's relevant. "Post your killboard statistics"? Meaningless, and only a couple lowsec pirates will even read it.

If you want me to read your posts instead of just skipping to the next item in the feed aggregator, post content. If you don't have anything interesting to say, don't say anything. Those of you with no posts other than banter blogs, stupid memes and copy-pasted eve news, I am talking to you.

It's not a popularity contest, pageviews are a terrible metric for success and if you want to write you should start by having something to write about.

That is all.

  1. I agree about the typing thing; I did the test because I was curious how much my typing had degraded (I grew up in the BBS days where you had to type in order to communicate) but when it came time to post it, I couldn't bring myself to do it.

As for statistics, I completely disagree. They can be interesting if you make them interesting. Sure, just flat stats are boring, but add a story or two about your favorite kill ever and it's a meaningful post.

I post fluff once in a while, but in the end at least it's somewhat interesting fluff -- to me anyway. If your blog writing isn't for you, then you're probably doing it wrong; nobody is going to get rich or famous blogging about EVE.

  2. So, what was your point and why should I care?

  3. Making them interesting -- that's the key. Copy-pasted battleclinic stats are boring. Analysis, stories, history, these things transform fluff into content. Any topic can be worthwhile as long as the author makes it so; I would never run missions, but a detailed analysis of how much isk/h mission running is worth post-tyrranis would be fascinating.

  4. Content is in the eye of the beholder. Most blogs are not written for your entertainment but the entertainment of those who write them. You don't like what they write? Don't read them, they're not blogging for you anyway.
